Have confidence that your business strategy and future technology will be delivered to plan and with less risk.

If you don’t know where you’re going any road will take you there.

You’ve completed your business strategy and you’ve sketched out the key goals for IT to enable the strategy, but how do you get from today to that new world of technology?

Implementing technology in this fast evolving, digital business environment has never been more challenging. In the face of this unprecedented change, organisations are being forced to make rapid technology decisions. The IT roadmap takes on enhanced importance for the technology leader as they move from operator to strategist. Our technology roadmap and implementation experience will help articulate a path to bring these big technology decisions to life.

An effective technology roadmap or implementation plan will map out the key steps from today to the future and consider such things as how the business operations will be impacted, dependencies, integration points, priorities, investment, resources and risks.

Cygnis brings its business and industry experience to bear, ensuring that we understand not only our client’s technology challenges, but also industry specific business concerns. We provide relevant and holistic support to ensure that choices suit business needs not only now but in the future.

Our experience developing Technology strategies, roadmaps and implementation plans has highlighted some common features a good technology roadmap should contain:

  • A list of strategic priorities for the business (not specific to IT) with rationale for why they are strategic
  • A timeline of the initiatives that will deliver on the strategy (approximate start and end dates over the years)
  • A prioritised list of IT improvement opportunities that complements the strategic initiatives (typically IT driven and enablers for the bigger initiatives)
  • At least an initial estimate of cost and resourcing expected for each initiative (this will be firmed up as the initiatives begin)
  • Unambiguous business leaders or sponsors for each of the initiatives, usually driven by who has the most to gain from a successful implementation

We believe that, in most cases, a “big bang” everything-at-once approach to technology implementation is not as effective as a phased approach. Agile and iterative approach to technology provides greater flexibility and control and allows better management of execution risks.

Technology is changing at a rapid rate and adoption of technology is more likely when it is focused and measured rather than pushed out all at once. We also believe a technology roadmap should consider whether the disruption, risk, cost and consumer satisfaction elements of a new technology or IT enabled capability favour one implementation approach over another. Every organisation is different and their technology roadmap must reflect that.

Technology roadmaps are great tools for technology leaders to guide investment and implementation discussions with their business leader colleagues. They are also a valuable guide for technology teams to manage resources and their own priorities to ensure they balance between strategic activity and maintenance activity. Functional leaders will also value a technology roadmap that helps them understand what the impact is to their teams and how they can best plan for change.
